It’s a very laid-back town with really beautiful remote spots along the Gulf of Carpentaria. The locals keep to themselves and a lot of them live off the land so they stay out in their communities – you get to visit all the outstations and communities and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
I’ve been here since the end of 2007 after a couple of years in Alice Springs. I like the remote area work, you get a good relationship happening with your customer contacts because you see the same people every day. Because it’s a small branch you have to be versatile in your skills base. We look after the Alscan bauxite mine and another 10 or so contractors in town. You learn heaps coming here.
Fishing is what attracted me to the area. The islands around here make for great fishing when the weather is right. You can catch anything from reef fish like coral trout and red emperor to any of the big game fish like bill fish. If you’re really keen you can catch marlin.
